[아주 작은 Review] SuJu ft. Solar / N.Flying / Momoland / MAMAMOO

Hi!

It’s time to start the new year of K-pop releases, and also for me to introduce a new section called 아주 작은 Review, which will be used for me to write short reviews on releases I found interesting but not enough to write a full scale post. It’s actually really helpful when there are too many releases coming out within short period of time, and you either: 1) don’t have enough time to review closely every single one without big delays; 2) get too overwhelmed with all releases because they’re good, but you can’t just figure out the right words to describe.

So, in this edition I’ll be reviewing last year’s SM STATION release by Super Junior members (feat. Solar of MAMAMOO), and this January’s three releases by N.Flying, MOMOLAND and MAMAMOO.

Heechul, Eunhyuk, Shindong ft. Solar (MAMAMOO) – Charm of life

Release date: December 8th, 2017

What’s interesting about it:

By this moment you should already know that I’m a huge sucker for brass sounds. And also I love those kind of songs where artists are just being playful but still delivering a high quality song, and this track exactly falls into that category. Solar definitely ensures the song quality with her vocals, but right when you think that Super Junior members are just fooling around (and probably are not contributing to song goodness, you listen to the background sound going on and be like, DAMN. Seriously, this track is so much fun. And CHECK OUT the lyrics, because this is a banger of a diss track. It definitely adds more points to overall song quality.

N.Flying – Hot Potato

Release date: January 3rd, 2018

What’s interesting about it:

I was really hooked in after their last comeback with The Real! And this song makes the perfect throwback at 90s rock sounds! I love how N.Flying can be versatile with their music style. Like, rock doesn’t always have to go one way. And seeing Hweseung giving more of his wonderful vocals to their songs is just awwwww. His addition to the band was, obviously, one of the best decisions FNC ever made. He doesn’t get overshined by other members, and really fit well with the group style!

MOMOLAND – Boom Boom

Release date: January 3rd, 2018

What’s interesting about it:

It started with a really nice guitar, but then the song overall turns out to be a huge mix of other songs’ vibes, both musically and vocally, the biggest reference would be Serebro’s Mi Mi Mi. It’s a nice song tho, but the fact that it reminds me so much of mentioned track that I actually hate so much… Not sure if it eventually will be able to enter my playlist because of that resemblance. In all other terms, it’s really a great and fun track that fits Momoland style.

Oh, and dance wise, they have lots of moves probably inspired by Orange Caramel’s My Copycat. And the overall song style also seems like what OC could pull off.

MAMAMOO – Paint me

Release date: January 4th, 2018

What’s interesting about it:

I am originally a fan of MAMAMOO’s music (I won’t go into deep explanation regarding their images, it’s gonna take long), and I was really excited knowing that the girls decided to go ballad with their first 2018 comeback. The other most wonderful thing about it is

MOONBYUL SINGING

I’m in love with her singing voice, and it’s really awesome that this time she’s being a vocalist, because damn she’s so underrated for her singing! I saw people complaining about the amount of lines she has, and here’s my very objective explanation: it’s the very first time Moonbyul officially introduces herself as a vocalist, and since people are not used to that image yet, the song producer can’t suddenly give her lots of lines, especially considering that her vocal range is totally different from other members. So instead of complaining, just shower the girls with complements on Byul’s singing, and sure RBW will hear you and give Byul more singing in their next releases.

How do you feel about this new section of reviews? Is it okay for you, or you still want more explanations on songs reviewed? If you still want to know more, just reply to the tweet, and I’ll make a short thread of further explanations!

Until next time!
