[아주 작은 Review] MxM / Jung Ilhoon / Sojung (Ladies’ Code) / Jang Jane x Suho

Another week, another episode of 아주 작은 Review section! I’m personally very satisfied that I’m doing it like this persistently, without burdening myself too much and allowing myself to have more time to absorb new releases.

In today’s edition I’ll be talking about title tracks from MxM, Jung Ilhoon of BTOB, Sojung of Ladies’ Code and Jang Jane & Suho.

MxM (Lim Youngmin & Kim Donghyun) – Gone Cold

Release date: March 6, 2018

What’s interesting about the song:

Brand New Music is working really hard in promoting their two trainees, Lim Youngmin and Kim Donghyun, while they’re waiting for the return of remaining members Lee Daehwi and Park Woojin, who are busy promoting as Wanna One. Out of all releases MxM duo have released so far, I like Gone Cold the most. Both I’m The One and Diamond Girl were of tropical house/EDM genre which couldn’t impress me that much due to already known reasons (if you read my blog frequently, of course). This time they went with melancholic vibes, and all I can think of now is how the style resembles what Epik High does in their music. It’s very chill and, at the same time, you feel the sadness from lyrics. It’s a song that you’d prefer listening to with eyes closed, while bringing up all memories of past relationship.

Jung Ilhoon (BTOB) – She’s Gone

Release date: March 8, 2018

What’s interesting about the song:

I’ve been a casual BTOB listener since New Men era (I’ll be your man), and I’ve always been impressed with their music, although I still didn’t manage to check out their full discography (I’ll do it soon, I promise, it’s on my check-out list). I wasn’t really that excited for Ilhoon’s solo debut since I wasn’t sure what kind of debut song one of main rappers would put out (I don’t listen to hip-hop much in general), but I never regretted checking out his MV and the title track on release day. It’s everything beyond amazing, especially the instrumentals, which were my biggest concern upon waiting for his debut. But dang, that ELECTRIC GUITAR. Never have I thought that rap could go SO WELL with rock elements. DAMN, this goes to my list of most impressive 2018 debuts.

Sojung (LADIES’ CODE) – Stay Here

Release date: March 8, 2018

What’s interesting about the song:

This song is so dreamy and I’m not sure if I ever heard a similar sound within K-pop (maybe I did, but I don’t remember well; gosh, I listen to too many songs to remember everything). It’s at the same time heavy and light? I don’t know how to properly explain what I feel when I listen to this song. But it’s really close to what I used to listen to from Russian fold duo Fleur, which are the only Russian artist I listen to up until now. It’s also a kind of song that you HAVE TO listen to with good headphones and eyes closed. It feels ten times better when you do so while lying on a bed and just focusing on all background sounds the song has.

Jang Jane & Suho (EXO) – Dinner

Release date: March 10, 2018

What’s interesting about the song:

I liked Jang Jane’s vocals since I first listened to her OST from K-drama Kill Me Heal Me. I thought this collaboration with Suho would be interesting, so I checked this out.

Definitely out of two songs they released, I prefer Dinner over Do You Have a Moment, simply because the latter one is pretty generic for me, while Dinner has something that makes you stay and listen to it again. I don’t know about you, but I usually like these kind of mysterious sounds, where synth goes muted (if that’s a correct term to use, please correct me if I’m wrong! ^^;), and in combination with alluring vocals of Jang Jane and smooth voice of Suho, the song becomes a very nice product of SM x Mystic Entertainment collaboration. Hope we will have more in the future.

  1. Enjoyed your 아주 작은 Review as usual!

I particularly like the flow of your songs for this review, it does feel like “Time”, meaning, the review starts with MxM which feels like the breaking of dawn, a waking-up song, and then transiting to mid-day with Jung Ilhoon where your energy picks up, and move on to a mini-emo moment at tea break with Sojung and ends the day with Jang JaneX Suho.

p.s It’s a real treat to listen to MxM – Gone cold and Jang Jane X Suho – Dinner!! Thanks for reviewing the songs and sharing interesting bits of each song^^

    Good day to you!
