[아주 작은 REVIEW] OH MY GIRL BANHANA / EXID / The Boyz / Jeong Jinwoon (April needs to show mercy to me for my own damn sake!)

Excuse me, I need some time to regain my breath and catch up with everything.
April is so packed up with amazing comebacks and debuts that I find it physically impossible to write full reviews now, it all gonna mess up in my head to properly brainstorm, so excuse me for writing small bites of reviews for such amazing releases I’m about to mention here.

This edition features OH MY GIRL BANHANA, first OMG sub-unit, EXIDThe Boyz, and Jung Jinwoon of 2AM.

OH MY GIRL BANHANA – Banana Allergy Monkey

Release date: April 2, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

I will fight every single one who says this song sucks, and that Oh My Girl should stick to fairy-tale concept only. If you’re only stanning them for tracks like CLOSER and Secret Garden only, you’re just literally disrespecting their whole quirky cute concept they’ve always been doing in between those fairy tale ones.
Aside from that, I’m pretty sure the cheesy lyrics for this song are meant to be satiric (just like how Orange Caramel, an After School sub-unit, works). The girls suit weird and cute concepts perfectly, and their previous releases (Liar LiarWindy Day, A-ing, Coloring Book) proves that. This time the producers took the whole thing to another level and boldly used 8-bit sounds for the sub-unit’s song. High-pitch vocals, weird but cute choreography, and 8-bit motifs? GOLD.

EXID – Lady

Release date: April 2, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

It really looks like K-pop are slowly moving from trap EDM and it’s sub genres (mostly namely tropical house) to recreating retro sounds of all kinds, from electro swing (SuJu, TVXQ), to New Jack Swing, which is exactly what EXID’s most recent release genre is. I honestly love how LE and Shinsadong Tiger keep experimenting with EXID’s music – the girls are one of the few artists who can effortlessly pull off any kind of sounds. And guess when did EXID ever disappoint us with their music? Exactly.
NEVER. (by the way, the bridge here is the absolute highlight of the song.)
But sure, we all miss Solji very much, but her health comes first, so I only can hope for her speedy recovery after the surgery, and that she can join the group activities before the end of this year.

The Boyz – Giddy Up

Release date: April 3, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Even with a pretty high quality debut song Boy, the 12-member rookie group couldn’t really interest me because the song was in the genre I couldn’t handle listening anymore, and to be frankly honest, in this case I find 12 members as too many, and the reason might sound very lame for you fans, but it’s because they’re all handsome in a very similar way, and that doesn’t really work well in Korean market. Although I’m sure their youthful spirit will be able to bring them recognition, but I personally would just skip these boys. However, their very first comeback since debut sound much better for my sensitive ears, and I should remind you that I’m a K-pop fan for its music. What I loved about this song is the very playful mix of funky guitar and electronica, plus vocal harmonies here are amazing. It’s a very groovy sound that I can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

Jeong Jinwoon – Erasing

Release date: April 3, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

I’m all in for catchy acoustic motifs. Plus again, a throwback to 70-80s folk music, which I subtly LOVE. This is such a chill song, I would definitely enjoy listening to it, for instance, when I’m on a train to another city. And that saxophone in the bridge! THAT! SAXOPHONE! Gosh, I’m so easily sold for brass sounds…
Anyways, if you’re looking for a chill, bright and easy to listen to song for a drive, make sure to add this release to your playlist, you won’t regret that.
