[아주 작은 Review] VIXX / HA:TFELT / DJ Hyo / A’Pink

Last post for today, phew! Let me say it again: April is a crazy month for new releases. I feel like everyone’s trying to compensate for an occupied by Winter Olympics February month when all releases would eventually get buried under the nation following the sports. There’s still  one more week to go, but somehow I feel like it’s been an eternity since the month started, and all those new songs flooded in. I barely manage to keep up with every single one here.

So for today’s episode of 아주 작은 Review, I’m featuring releases from VIXX, HA:TFELT, DJ Hyo, and A’Pink.

VIXX – Scentist

Release date: April 17, 2018

What’s interesting (not much tho) about this song:

Unfortunately, this song wasn’t as impressive as Shangri-la was, if you just take the song without the MV and the concept. The song eventually goes the very familiar for 2017-2018 EDM trap route, and the only thing that stands out A LOT is the first pre-chorus. There’s something about it that lures you in, just like how the use of traditional instrumentals made VIXX’s previous release so magical. Here, I don’t feel anything special musically. Yes, along with the concept of perfumers and very artistic (as usual, it’s damn VIXX we’re talking about) MV it overall looks like a masterpiece, but the song alone doesn’t stand out as how all their previous title tracks did.

HA:TFELT – Pluhmm

Release date: April 18, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Ever since Yenny left JYP and joined Amoeba Culture to become more of an indie artist, she’s been releasing bops after bops. Like, did I tell you how much I love her I Wander? This single, Deine, also didn’t disappoint with the music quality, but again, maybe because I was too impressed by I Wander that I couldn’t feel this one as much, even in comparison to her first ever album under JYP (if you haven’t listened to her solo debut Ain’t Nobody, do it right now, you’re missing a LOT). Deine will take much more time for me to get used to the sound compared to Meine, but it’s not like I’ll be complaining though. But it’s still not an instant “love at the first listen”.

DJ Hyo (SNSD Hyoyeon) – Sober

Release date: April 18, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

The song totally showcases the improvement of Hyoyeon as a vocalist, but again, one thing that I can’t dig in this release at all – tropical house genred chorus. It’s so overly used that I shrug at the only thought of hearing this genre again. So whenever I hear my favorite or frequently listened artist releasing a tropical house song, I just go *sigh*. There’s nothing for me to talk about when the songs have same overused traps. Do you personally wish me writing, “there’s a trappy tropical house beat that can lift your mood in summer” every single release? that’s exactly the reason I don’t listen to KARD despite their international popularity

A’Pink – Miracle

Release date: April 19, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Another type of songs that I find hard to absorb, no matter how good they happen to be: fan songs. This is exactly what A’Pink’s special single Miracle is. But what I’d like to point out here is how Eunji sings more in her original vocal register than what she usually does in A’Pink songs. I love the verses with that half-rapping half-singing techniques. Despite sounding completely differently, I subtly feel like the vibe of this song matches with Dreamcatcher’s It’s Okay (and that’s one of my favorite ballads from mentioned group). I’m sure Pink Pandas love this song a lot, but I don’t think I’ll add it to my already overwhelming playlist, despite that amazing ending part that I dig so much.
