[아주 작은 Review] Teen Top / Cross Gene / Yong Junhyung / SPECTRUM

Hello!

I’m back from my semi-hiatus/annual break/trip (choose your option), and ready to catch up with latest releases!
To be honest, I barely checked any releases during my break, as I almost didn’t touch my phone much and truly was taking a break from everything social media. I might still need some time to get back to my usual blogging and fangirling pace (as I really enjoyed taking a break), but I have to start somewhere, right?

In the seventeenth edition of 아주 작은 Review I’ll be talking about title tracks from Teen Top, Cross Gene, Yong Junhyung (of HIGHLIGHT), and freshly debuted SPECTRUM.

Teen Top – Seoul Night

Release date: May 8, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Usually I would complain about the overuse of house/EDM elements in recent releases, but I suddenly like the song? It’s party themed, so we can make it an excuse. But I personally couldn’t feel much from that break in the bridge. I loved the rap, but didn’t quite like the instrumentals under that. Except for it, the song is a great late night track, I think I still will add to my driving playlist.

Cross Gene – Touch It

Release date: May 8, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Cross Gene’s recent album Zero, which icludes title track Touch It, went fully Tropical house way, and I can’t help but be… unimpressed with this whole piece. An overused trap and heavily instrumental-based chorus is so outdated now, I somehow can’t understand why Amuse suddenly didn’t work harder on the album as they usually do. Cross Gene’s discography is one of the best I heard along with NU’EST, so it’s upsetting for me personally to not being able to feel this album. Their pre-release single Dystopia was so amazing, it made my expectations on this EP go up high to the roof, only to crash it down with such generic sound.

Yong Junhyung (HIGHLIGHT) – Go Away

Release date: May 9, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

HIGHLIGHT has been on a roll ever since their escape from Cube Ent. and rebranding, with several group comebacks and solo releases from members. It’s surprising to know that this is only solo debut for Yong Junhyung, who is known for producing lots of HIGHLIGHT stuff before. Junhyung’s solo debut goes R&B way, something that you’d usually hear from Heize? That kind of chill R&B. I’ve been liking a lot of R&B tracks recently, so this one is a pleasant addition to my forever growing playlist. Definitely will check out the full album!

SPECTRUM – Light It Up

Release date: May 9, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

I have to be honest, but this debut went totally plain for me. I had some expectations since the group had one of the Produce 101 season 2 contestants (Kim Jaehan, who previously was a MMO trainee), but looks like this is a total miss. I listened to the song three times, and all three times I couldn’t find anything that could catch my attention. There’s barely anything special about the track, and the vocal/rap line are not outstanding yet at this point. SPECTRUM needs a stronger song to get the public interest.
