It’s Friday! Meaning the other new section I announced few days ago is launching today!
Thaaat’s right, Hidden Gemstone that will be published every Friday is starting its new journey on my blog! If B-sides Treasure is all about non-title tracks from K-pop artist’s releases, Hidden Gemstone will focus on title tracks that didn’t get much attention or enough appreciation during its promotional time, and, of course, never deserved to be slept on.
The pioneers of this new blog section will be a project duo Longguo & Shihyun that previously were participants of survival show Produce 101 season 2.
Longguo & Shihyun – the.the.the

Chart peaks: Gaon physical – #5
Lyrics: Longguo & Shihyun – the.the.the
Longguo & Shihyun is one of the very first post-Produce 101 season 2 groups that debuted after participating in the show, and consist of two Choon trainees, Chinese member Jin Longguo, also known by Korean name Kim Yongguk (he was the main vocalist of another project group called JBJ), and Korean member Kim Shihyun.
the.the.the was produced by Devine Channel who’s also the mastermind behind Open Up, one of concept evaluation songs from Produce 101, hence the similar dark vibe in the instrumental. It’s the type of songs that I would personally call “a classically made K-pop song”. Maybe it’s because I barely heard anything from western music for a long time, but the.the.the doesn’t sound like something heavily influenced by western trends, hence serves as one of perfect songs you can use to introduce K-pop to a non-fan. I’m personally really loving the dark sexy vibes coming from both synth beats and the boys vocals that are a wonderful fit (definitely more suiting than Shihyun’s work in Sweet Potato x100 and Longguo’s solo Clover).
It was a perfect start for both Longguo and Shihyun, but, unfortunately, little exposure on variety shows and poor PR management is the reason why this song was eventually skipped by many people. Nonetheless, it gained a decent popularity among core fans of Produce 101 season 2, hence landing #5 on 31st week of 2017 Gaon physical charts.
I really hope this is not the only release for this project unit, as they have a perfect vocal balance and synergy together, so let’s see if Choon decides to give them a comeback. I believe they can be as impressive as GOT7’s JJ Project is.
What do you think of this song? Does it deserve more appreciation? Or not strong enough?
