[아주 작은 REVIEW] MAMAMOO / Triple H / GFRIEND / Seungri (BIGBANG)

I’m so behind my blogging schedules >__< Having some drafts since probably beginning of this year is also not adding any coolness to it. I need to learn time-management, otherwise I will never have things done in time.

All the way back to our regular 아주 작은 REVIEW section (permission to now refer to it as AJR [aju jakeun review]?), here we have summer releases from MAMAMOO, Triple H, GFRIEND and Seungri of BIGBANG.

MAMAMOO – Egotistic

Release date: July 16, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

*sigh* I feel myself more distant from MAMAMOO with each of their newest releases. Like, I totally get the point that no group stays within one genre, but ever since Purple album I stopped feeling the “MAMAMOO” in the songs they release. The further we go, the trendier their songs are, and specifically Egotistic made me really uncomfortable. It’s like everything about the song is being overwhelmed without thoughts on a balance between strong instrumental and even stronger vocals. Just for a note: I consider Decalcomanie as another example of a strong music+strong voices, but it never seemed overwhelming to me, and it still had MAMAMOO flair in. Egotistic, on the other hand… doesn’t make me feel excited at all. This is not the best execution of Latin inspiration.

Triple H – Retro Future

Release date: July 18, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Triple H are picking up from their debut single 365 Fresh, and I don’t wanna claim that they’re just repeating what they did there, but I can’t help but hear similarities in songs vibes. I felt that something was still lacking in the song, maybe it’s the lack of Hyuna’s presence in it in terms of lines? But I guess I still like the fact this trio are really going retro way in their music. If this is the music style Triple H is setting up for themselves, then I’m totally approving it. But I’ll be honest, this group’s music is sort of a guilty pleasure to me. and I slightly like 365 Fresh more

GFRIEND – Sunny Summer

Release date: July 18, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Doing a wordplay with members’ names in song lyrics is a very witty idea, Source Music, I love it (even if Yuju’s and Yerin’s couldn’t actually fit into the actual wordplay topic). Also this song for me is a strong mix of their previous title track Navillera and the original summer queens SISTAR’s I swear, especially in the brass part (is it actually just the same brass sample used though?), which are the songs that I initially love a lot. Still, it sounded like a full-scale summer song I’d love to listen to anywhere in this hot summer (no pun intended) and it just makes me happy whenever it pops up in my shuffle playlist. It’s so good, the color red (although more muted red if we compare to super bright tone from last year’s RV hit) totally suits with the song. Definitely one of the best “summer” songs of this year.

Seungri – 1, 2, 3!

Release date: July 20, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Man, MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN. This song knocked me off the chair I was sitting on when I first listened to this. That electric guitar is just pure eargasm for me. I guess the popular meme of “it cleared my acne, improved my grades” and so on is very fitting here. I love this challenge from Seungri, he did an amazing job in both writing and composing this song. I still haven’t listened to the full album, but this song along deserves all music show wins. It’s so exciting, so funky, so entertaining and perfectly describes BIGBANG’s maknae as an entertaining artist. I’m in desperate love with this song.

I’ll try to be more productive starting from August onward in order to establish a more solid base of my blog since it’s going to become a part of my life project, so if there’s anything you think I could improve (besides music theory that I totally don’t have knowledge of and probably should learn by now), please let me know!

Also what among these four was your favorite?
