[아주 작은 REVIEW] Soyeon, Chungha, Seulgi, SinB / NU’EST W / Yuri (SNSD) / Super Junior

Erm… Hi.

Okay, probably I hurried a little bit with my “grande” return from hiatus, as some of my life issues hasn’t been solved yet, hence I still didn’t schedule up all my daily routine to stick to in order to keep up with daily chores and blogging. But I’ll get there soon! Really soon. Probably by the 1st anniversary of the blog. Pssst.

So, before I disappear again for god knows how many more days, let me do a quick review of some latest releases I enjoyed? Today I have a craaaazy collaboration from Station 0NU’EST W (who I’m apparently seeing in Bangkok super soon), Yuri of SNSD, and Super Junior.

Station 0: Chungha, Jeon Soyeon, SinB, Seulgi – Wow Thing

Release date: September 28, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

This is very unexpected combination of some top female idols of third generation. And I must say, this combination works amazingly. We have passionate dancers, versatile vocalists and the best rapper Station project could’ve picked up for this quartet. What I need to say at this point is that almost every single song that is being released recently needs a couple of listens before I can say for sure whether I like the track or not. Now that half a month passed already, I am convinced that this is a total bop. Nothing is overwhelming, the dance routine compliments the song vibes, and the ladies themselves were gorgeous. The electric guitar  (but I’m suspecting it’s a synthesized guitar) was wonderfully used for the main instrumental line. Soyeon totally killed the second verse, and I was as well mind blown by how prettily she was styled in the MV.

NU’EST W – I Don’t Care (With Spoonz)

Release date: October 1, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Despite the song being a promotional collaboration with character brand Spoonz (for whom NU’EST W are modeling for), the boys didn’t tinker with the production quality. Baekho and BUMZU were, again, in charge of creating the track, and all members participated in lyrics writing. I Don’t Care may not be the best song ever (if you objectively compare it to the group’s other significant compositions), but it also makes a very suitable addition to their rich discography (both as NU’EST and NU’EST W). The playful synth and silly lyrics perfectly mix together to give you that exact chill mood you might look for. The message of the release is also very lovely: just do whatever you want and don’t care about anything else. If you tripped over the stone, it’s okay. If you come a little bit late, it’s totally okay. Just be yourself and enjoy your time. Also, can we talk about how the members really represent the Spoonz characters so well? Especially Ren and Cindy.

Yuri (SNSD) – Into You

Release date: October 4, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

The SNSD member that, in my opinion, should’ve already had her solo long time ago, finally got one! Even with Into You going the nowadays trendy house genre with Latin elements, it perfectly suits Yuri, and it’s really hard for me to imagine her doing something else. The visual styling in the MV sometimes gives me serious “what the heck”, and honestly, I would rather listen to the song without the visual sequence. The music video wasn’t even getting to half the level of the song’s quality (SM, you could do much better, come on!). While Into You 100% fits Yuri stylistically, this is still not my cup of tea. I probably will play it every other time, but the skipping ratio for my playlist would be definitely higher. Sorry, Yuri.

Super Junior & REIK – One More Time (Otra Vez)

Release date: October 8, 2018

What’s interesting about this song:

Super Junior continues exploring Latin pop genre, and I would say, the fusion keeps getting better and better. Last time we had Lo Siento featuring Leslie Grace, and now Super Junior teamed up with REIK for One More Time. It’s really nice to see how well it mixes up with female or male Latin featuring. Also the return of the Little Prince Ryeowook adds another special spice to the overall sound. While SuJu and ELFs are still waiting for the last main vocal Kyuhyun to demobilize from army (which is soon!), the group continues utilizing other members vocal ranges to its maximum, which is always nice to see. I would say that SuJu’s harmonies are one of my favorite along with SHINee and VROMANCE. It’s very powerful and convincing, and completes the song.

Yes, I know. It took me another 10 days to publish the new post after the announcement. I’m trying to figure out what I can improve in my blog and probably combine some elements to save my time to do other things without losing its original quality. So, if you have any suggestions on what I could add on, remove or modify, please let me know in the comments section!

Also, what was your favorite release so far?

  1. The collaboration with Chungha, Soyeon, SinB, and Seulgi was nice. I wanted something like this for a while. I’ve only listened to Chungha and Seulgi I believe (are Soyeon and SinB solo artists or from a group?) but from what I remember from my first listen I liked the song. It’ll probably take me a few listens to like it more as I don’t remember how it sounds, but it was good from what I do remember hahahah. There are only a few of the Latin-influenced K-Pop songs that I’ve liked (O Sole Mio, Lo Siento, El Dorado, Airplane pt 2, and Regular).

    1. If you wanted something like Wow Thing, I highly recommend Honey Bee from another collaboration featuring Luna of f(x), Hani of EXID and Solar from MAMAMOO (released in 2016). Soyeon is the main rapper of rookie group (G)I-DLE (Latata and Hann are their popular songs), and SinB is the main dancer of GFRIEND.

      1. Oooh I’ll have to check out Honey Bee! Thanks for the rec 🙂 Oh I like Latata from (G)I-DLE, though I haven’t found much of an interest in GFRIEND.
